The Leather Jacket

November 13th daily blog devotional by Keith Wayne Edwards

Hebrews 13:16

And do not neglect doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

Philipians 2:4

Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.

It was a cold day on my way to the grocery store to get a few things. I was wearing my favorite leather jacket. As I drove into the parking lot I see a homeless man standing in front of the store. I felt like the Lord told me to give that brand new leather jacket to the homeless man. I argued with the Lord for a minute hoping it was just my imagination but still felt that inward voice within me tell me to give it away. It was hard to let that thing go, and God was letting me know that we didn't bring anything into this world, and we won't be able to take anything with us when we pass to the other life. Jesus said, "You've done it to the least of these you've done it unto me." I went over to this homeless man and gave him my jacket. He was only wearing a thin sweater, but he insisted that I should keep it. I told him, man, the Lord told me to give this thing to you. I prayed with him and after we got through praying found out that he was just down on his luck. His story touched my heart and I gave him 20 dollars to get something to eat. He immediately went to the sandwich shop and got him something. As I got into my car my flesh was screaming but my spirit was rejoicing. I also remembered that I had a 20 dollar bill in the pocket of that beautiful black leather jacket, but I'm sure he needed that too. You see friend, I'm saying this to let you know that you can be a blessing to someone, but sometimes it's like putting your own Isaac upon the altar. You'll be far blessed though than you could ever imagine, and there will be rewards for us when we do it in humbleness and compassion. Let's look for ministry opportunity each and every day, and let's reach out with Jesus to be His hands and feet to walk the broken streets, a shining light in the night for all the world to see.

Lord, fill us with compassion to be that light to a dark world. Help us to see with your eyes, and forgive us for not having a heart for a broken world.
