The Horse Ride

October 23rd daily blog devotional by Keith Wayne Edwards

Psalms 25:9

He leads the humble in justice,

And He teaches the humble His way.

Romans 8:14

For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

I can remember riding horses when I was 16 years old, and getting on this one horse that my cowboy friend told me was a rough horse to ride. He gave me instructions on what to do and how to ride her. I got on this horse with my head lifted high thinking I was all that and off I went. I remember him telling me to not pull on the reigns a certain way because the horse will take off to full speed, and take off is exactly what she did. I went flying down this big trail hitting a branch and almost knocking me completely off of her. I looked like a crazy cowboy barely hanging on. I finally got control of her and she calmed down. I began to bond with her a little as a horse will turn its head and touch your knee, feeling the calmness and confidence the horse understands. I learned a great deal that day. How many times do we lift our head up in pride and get ahead of God without walking in His instruction to keep us on that path He has laid out for us to walk down, a path that we can understand if we just walk in His ways. My friend, God loves you so much and He wants you to let Him lead and guide you, but you have to surrender all to Him. Sometimes we tell the Lord that we surrender all to Him but we try and tell Him how we want Him to guide us. We tell the Lord at times that we want Him to prune us and shake us to make us more like Him, but we turn that spiritual temperature to about 74 degrees and say this is where I want you to keep me at Lord. Let Him guide and make you more like Christ. I think we can learn a great deal from my horse experience. You can make it today. God's got this!

Lord, help us to feel the warm embrace of your heart to ours as we walk down that path with you. Let us not get ahead of your plan and calling in our life, and help us to stay humble as you take us step by step. Show us, Lord, that we are your children, and we can be led by your Spirit as we abide in you and you in us.
